Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) Mushroom History
Also known as Wild Trametes, the Turkey Tail mushroom is commonly found in forests around the world. Primarily, this mushroom grows on the bark of deciduous trees and they are harvested and studied for their beta-glucan content, among other qualities. Interesting to note, In the 1980’s, varieties of the Trametes mushrooms were collected by Japanese scientists and incorporated into new pharmaceuticals, some of which even passed government testing for common use. Making these pharmaceuticals was a rigorous process. First, mycelium was fermented in liquid culture, which creates unique protein-bound polysaccharides. Finally, all the different compounds were concentrated and refined into drugs like PSP and PSK.
