Chaga Mushroom History

Thriving in Russia, northern China, northern Europe and similar climates, Chaga grows primarily on trees of the birch variety. Interestingly, while it is considered a mushroom, Chaga is technically a thick blob of dark wood and mycelium with an undefined shape, also known as a conk. While chaga resembles burnt charcoal on the outside, it’s center is actually orange and soft in texture. For hundreds of years, northern Europeans, Russians and Chinese have collected Chaga to use in traditional medicine.

Chaga Mushroom Uses

Although it is quite ugly in appearance, the Chaga mushroom is full of antioxidants and  is gaining popularity for its potential health benefits. In traditional medicine, Chaga is often used to stimulate the immune system, calm stomach issues and boost overall health.

Birch trees, which the chaga mass feeds off of, contain triterpenoid betulin. Chaga eventually draws out this betulin along with other properties from its host and turns them into inotodiol, trametenolic acid and betulinic acid.
